Benard Wanjala is a leading figure in Kenyan and African chess, known for his impactful work as a player, coach, and influential administrator. His involvement in the sport spans over two decades, beginning in 2004 when he first engaged as a competitive player. Wanjala’s passion for chess quickly extended beyond playing; he focused on promoting the game at the grassroots level, aiming to demystify chess and make it accessible to a broader audience. His efforts have targeted schools, youth programs, and marginalized communities, significantly expanding the sport’s reach in Kenya.
Wanjala currently serves as the President of Chess Kenya, a role in which he has implemented transformative strategies to develop the sport. Since taking on the presidency, he has overseen substantial growth in membership, introduced structured tournaments, and spearheaded the establishment of regional branches across the country’s 47 counties. His leadership has been crucial in organizing national events and increasing the visibility of chess in Kenya, positioning the country as a significant player on the African chess scene.
Wanjala’s influence extends beyond the national level. In 2022, he was appointed as an Advisor to the FIDE President, where he represents African interests on the global stage. He focuses on advocating for chess development across the continent, emphasizing capacity building, training programs, and enhancing Africa’s presence in international chess events. Prior to this role, he served as Vice President of the Africa Chess Confederation from 2018 to 2022, where he worked on initiatives to strengthen the organizational framework of chess federations across Africa.
In addition to his advisory role to the FIDE President, Wanjala serves as an advisor to the FIDE Social Commission, which focuses on using chess as a tool for social impact. He has led programs in Kenya that integrate chess into social development projects, particularly in underserved communities. One of his notable initiatives includes introducing chess to the Kakuma Refugee Camp, where the game has been used to foster empowerment, education, and community engagement among displaced individuals.
Outside of chess, Wanjala has an extensive professional career as a banker. He worked for Equity Bank, one of Kenya’s leading financial institutions, for 12 years. His banking experience, combined with his educational background—a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (Strategic Management)—has equipped him with valuable skills in strategic planning, financial management, and organizational leadership.
Looking ahead, Wanjala aims to continue his work in transforming chess in Kenya and beyond. His vision includes building sustainable systems for the sport, creating value for stakeholders, and increasing the visibility of chess at both the national and international levels. He is committed to leveraging chess for educational and social impact while focusing on nurturing a strong pipeline of young talent capable of competing on the global stage.
