Program Governance
The Refugee Chess Program operates under a well-defined governance structure, ensuring collaboration, accountability, and efficient execution across all levels. A steering committee—comprising representatives from FIDE, UNHCR, Chess Kenya, LWF, Kakuma Chess Club, and local schools—oversees the program’s direction, strategy, and performance.
The implementation is coordinated on the ground by a project leader, supported by facilitators, school representatives, and a dedicated administrative team across Kakuma and Kalobeyei.

Leadership Team
Our Trainers
The program currently works with 24 trained facilitators who lead weekly chess sessions in schools and youth centers across the camps. Each trainer is attached to one or more institutions and plays a key role in mentorship, tournament organization, and reporting.
Bellow is a detailed list of trainers and their assigned schools.
Organizational Structure
The organizational framework fosters clear reporting lines, collaborative decision-making, and localized leadership:
- Steering Committee: Strategic oversight and partner coordination
- Project Leader: Daily execution and field management
- Facilitators: School-level trainers and club organizers
- Administrative Team: Support with logistics, planning, and data collection
