2024 Kenya Juniors Chess Championship (U20) (Open & Girls)

1. INVITATION

The Chess Kenya Federation (CKF) is inviting junior players to participate in the 2024 Kenya Juniors Chess Championship (U20) (Open & Girls) that will be held on 25th (Arrival) – 26th (Departure) October, 2024 at Luke Hotel.

2. Eligibility

The players eligible to participate should have been born on or after 1st January, 2004.

2.1 Invitation by Chess Kenya Federation.

The Tournament is strictly invitational, limited to top players who participated in the concluded Kenya Schools Individual Chess Championships at Nakuru High School/Nakuru Girls School and Kenya National Youth & Cadets at Mangu High school as follows:

  • Defending Champions
    Robert Mcligeyo- Free Entry
    Erica Muturi-Free Entry
  • All reigning National Champions-Free Entry
  • Participants of Kenya National Youth Chess Championship 2024 - Minimum Six Points - Entry Ksh. 1500
  • Kenya National Schools Chess Championship 2024 - Minimum 7 Points - Entry Ksh. 1500
  • Open to all others above the age of 18 but born on or after 1st January, 2004 - Entry fee Ksh. 1500

2.2 Letter of Release

Those who need letters of release may write to Chess Kenya through contacts provided.

2.3 Categories

Players can play either in Open Section or Ladies Section.

3. REGISTRATION

  • All registrations must be completed no later than 23rd October, 2024 at 6.00pm. Failure to register will be considered a forfeiture of slots granted.
  • All entries should be submitted online through the following link:

  • The organizers reserve the rights to accept or decline any registrations received after this deadline.

4. ACCOMMODATION AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

All players will make their own accommodation and travel arrangements.

6. TOURNAMENT AWARDS

Best player in open and ladies sections will be sponsored to represent Kenya in
World Junior 2025.

Those who want to take part in Africa Junior on self sponsored basis in Giza,
Egypt must attain a minimum of 4 points.

7. SYSTEM OF PLAY & TOURNAMENT RULES

This is a FIDE Rated tournament; therefore, all FIDE rules apply.

7.1 The tournament format

The tournament format is Swiss system of 90 minutes flat per player in each round. A total of 6 rounds shall be played in each category.

7.2 Default time (walk-over time)

The default time for arrival on the chess board is until the time runs out.

7.3 Draw Condition

  • Players cannot agree to a draw before black’s 30th move is completed.
  • This rule only applies to a draw by agreement. A game may still be drawn before black’s 30th move with respect to FIDE Laws of Chess Article 9.2 (three-fold repetition), and 9.6 (five-fold repetition).

7.4 Electronic Devices

  • Players must not use electronic devices in the playing hall, or during games, all electronic devices are to be left with the Chief Arbiter.
  • Players found with electronic devices (whether switched on or off) will lose the game immediately, if their game is already completed, the player will not be paired in the next round.

7.5 Pairings & Scoring (Tie-Breaks)

  • A win is 1 point, a draw is ½ a point, and a loss 0 points.
  • The second tie-break is direct encounter, the third greater number of victories, the fourth tie-break is Buchholz System, and the fifth tie-break is the Sonneborn–Berger Score.
  • Pairings, results, and standings will be posted on Chess-Results.

7.6 Recording Sheets

The recording sheet is the property of the tournament organizer; a copy will be provided to players. After the completion of the game, players are to sign both recording sheets and submit them to the arbiter.

7.7 Playing Area

  • Players & spectators can only enter the playing area with the permission of an arbiter.
  • Players can only leave the playing area with the permission of an arbiter, otherwise, they risk being penalized.

7.8 Appeal Procedure

An Appeal Committee will be formed and announced before the start of round 1. To appeal a decision, players must submit an appeal within 15 minutes after the end of a match to the Chief Arbiter along with a refundable appeal fee of KES. 1,500. The fee is refundable upon a successful appeal.

Note: The tournament organizer may make adjustments to the tournament rules and regulations. Any amendments made will be communicated in good time.
