Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia | 8th–17th November 2025

Event Overview

Join chess enthusiasts from across the Commonwealth at the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2025, hosted by the Malaysian Chess Federation under the auspices of the Commonwealth Chess Association and FIDE. Held in vibrant Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 8th November (arrival) to 17th November 2025 (departure), this prestigious event will take place at the Corus KLCC Hotel Grand Ballroom, near the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers. Compete in Classical and Blitz tournaments for a total prize pool of RM95,000 (~USD22,900) across Open, Women, Seniors, Under-20, and Age Group categories.

Eligibility

  • Open to All: Players from Commonwealth countries.
  • Age Group Categories:
    • Under-8: Born on or after 1st January 2017
    • Under-10: Born on or after 1st January 2015
    • Under-12: Born on or after 1st January 2013
    • Under-14: Born on or after 1st January 2011
    • Under-16: Born on or after 1st January 2009
    • Under-18: Born on or after 1st January 2007
  • Open Category Prizes:
    • Seniors: Born on or before 1st January 1965 (60+)
    • Under-20: Born on or after 1st January 2005
    • Disabled: Must provide medical proof/card
  • Official Entries: Each country may nominate one official player per category (one man, one woman, one Senior, one Under-20 Boy, one Under-20 Girl for Open; one boy and one girl per age group). Additional players may register without limit, subject to fees.

Tournament Format

Classical Tournament

  • Categories: Open, Age Groups (Under-8 to Under-18, Boys & Girls)
  • Rounds: 9 rounds
  • Time Control: 90 minutes + 30-second increment per move
  • Pairing System: Swiss Manager
  • Note: Categories with fewer than 5 federations or 10 players may be merged per FIDE regulations.

Blitz Tournament

  • Categories: Open and Youth (Under-18)
  • Rounds: 7–9 rounds
  • Time Control: 3 minutes + 2-second increment per move
  • Pairing System: Swiss Manager

Tiebreak System (both events)

  1. Direct Encounter
  2. Greater Number of Wins (forfeits counted, pairing bye excluded)
  3. Buchholz Cut 1
  4. Buchholz Cut 2
  5. Greater Number of Wins with Black Pieces

Accommodation

  • Details: Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner via food coupons at Corus KLCC). Official players receive free accommodation (double/triple sharing). Non-official players and accompanying persons must book through the organizer.
  • Note: Players or accompanying persons booking independently will be removed without refund. Early arrivals or late departures require self-arranged accommodation.

Airport Transfers

  • Provided: Free transfers for registered players and accompanying persons arriving at KLIA on 7th–8th November and departing on 17th November 2025.
  • Other Dates: Arrange own transport; organizer may assist with additional charges.

Closing Dinner and Prize Giving Ceremony

  • Date: 16th November 2025, 8:00 PM
  • Venue: Corus KLCC Hotel
  • Access: Included for those who paid the registration fee. Others may purchase tickets (USD50 ~ KES6,600) on 15th November, subject to availability.

Registration Deadlines

  • Soft Closing: 8th October 2025 (50% deposit required)
  • Full Payment: 31st October 2025
  • Late Entries: After 8th October, USD50 (~KES6,600) penalty per player; no entries after 30th October 2025.
  • Note: Players without full payment by the players’ meeting on 8th November 2025 may be removed without refund.
