Pilot USMCL League Staged in Kenya and Other 4 Countries

The United States Masters Chess League (USMCL) is a professional chess league featuring the Battle of the Masters, an exclusive annual event designed for elite chess players in the U.S. The league, established by Inez Kelley in 2023, is a high-stakes competition for master-level players. It is not a learning platform but a battleground for the best. The league evolved from the Battle of the Masters, a competition between the top players, and features teams consisting of three players and one reserve.

Eligibility

Participation in the USMCL is strictly limited to men who are over 18 years old.

Origins and Inspiration

Kelley founded the league in honor of her late brother, Mr. Armand Kelley, a passionate chess advocate who passed away in 2019. Armand was the face of chess in New York City and played for Kingsman Chess Club alongside Kenyan-American player Adia Onyango. She was further inspired by the lack of opportunities for African American chess players. You can read more at The Chess Drum.

Goals of USMCL

The USMCL serves three major goals:

  • Recognition of Chess as a Sport: While chess doesn’t have the same physicality as other sports, Kelley believes it is a sport that requires mental discipline, strategy, and problem-solving skills.
  • Engagement of Spectators and Building a Loyal Fanbase: Kelley aims to convert spectators into loyal fans by offering in-person matches, live digital streaming, pre-game shows, entertainment, and other fan-centric experiences.
  • Establishing Operational Infrastructure for Consistent Revenue: The league compensates players for their participation, creating a sustainable space for players to continue their careers in chess.

Expansion into Africa

In addition to growing the USMCL in the U.S., Kelley has partnered with prominent African leaders to expand the league’s influence in Africa. The partnership includes:

  • Benard Wanjala (Kenya)
  • Ansumana Kamara (Sierra Leone)
  • Prince Adeyinka Adewole (Nigeria)
  • Thomas Karyah (Liberia)

Together, they are launching a pilot league involving four African countries before potentially opening the league to the entire continent.

Format of the League

Each country will organize qualifiers to select the top three players, with the qualifiers broadcast live on the IDchess platform with full commentary. Teams from the four countries will compete in an online league, earning cash rewards for every win. Kelley explained that the goal is to start small, testing the concept with low stakes, but with plans to increase the stakes in future editions.

The best players from each country will then form a team to compete in the USMCL league in the U.S., with players compensated for every match they play.

Current Status of the Pilot League

So far, the selection process in different countries is as follows:

  • Sierra Leone: Held their selection on 1st March at Hotel Bar Moi.
  • Liberia: Held its selection on 22nd February.
  • Kenya: Scheduled for March 15, 2025, at Clarion Hotel, Nairobi.

This marks the first step in bringing the USMCL to Africa and creating more opportunities for African chess players.
